500 not out for Marcus!

July 30, 2019

Ashburton CC are delighted to celebrate a fantastic landmark achievement that was passed this weekend at Varwell Field. Plympton's Jake Agnew, became Marcus West's 500th league wicket for the club, becoming the first player in club's history to reach such landmark. Marcus was on 502 as the innings closed!

Marcus, 44 and Head of School at St Catherine’s Church of England Primary, made his senior debut for the club aged just 16, in 1991 under the captaincy of Del Owen. Ashburton were bowled out for 28 in the game, with Marcus one of seven ducks! "The game was over so quickly, we had a Twenty20 friendly after the game to get both sides some game time! I opened up with Nick Yabsley and made 28!' West remembered.

West, first represented Ashburton as a colt, aged 11, but played for the under 18's, as this was the only age group that the club ran! After 28 consecutive seasons of senior cricket, Marcus now becomes the first player to clock up 500 victims, across both first and second XI cricket. He accounted for 416 wickets at 20.14 in the 1st XI and has taken a further 86 in the 2nd XI where he now plays under the captaincy of his fellow opener from his debut, Nick Yabsley!

Its not just Marcus that represents the West family – his two sons, AJ & Kirkby both represent the Chargers whilst wife Chrissie, who used to represent the ladies team, has even put the whites on to ensure they were all in the scorebook at the same time!

Marcus shared a proud moment alongside his family and fellow club members when Nick Yabsley presented a unique club cap with initials and the landmark figure embroidered on each side.

He reflected on the occasion “I am so proud to be part of such an amazing club and to have had the honour to play alongside so many great people. The fact that I was playing alongside Yabbers & Jerry when I took my 500th says it all as I played alongside them when I took my first as well. Looking forward to seeing the new generation coming through the club reaching their milestones over the coming years. Exciting times for the club.”

Nick Yabsley also reflected ‘It is an absolute privilege to have played alongside Marcus from his very first ball. His contributions to the club, both on and off the field are absolutely invaluable and being able to call on his experience for advice and guidance every weekend is of great help. Congratulations Westy, and here’s to the next 500!’
