1st XI:
Ashburton first team travelled to play Paignton 2nds in their Devon Cricket League Tier 3 (South) fixture.
Paignton won the toss and elected to bat on a good-looking pitch and Ashes made an early breakthrough as Charlie Towers picked up a wicket of Steven George. Runs then flowed freely and Ashes were made to work hard in the field as Connor Bryan (66) and Mark Smith (37) took them to 104 for 1. The introduction of George Marshall (8 overs, 3 for 34) into the attack slowed the run-scoring and keeping Paignton to around 22o looked achievable until the last few overs when Sam Glanfield (46no) started to cut loose and led Paignton to a final total of 248 for 7 in their 40 overs.
Ashburton then struggled to keep up with the required rate against some disciplined Paignton bowling. Opener Jake Pascoe (27) , Steve Edmonds (27) and Dan Coles (21) the only real batsman to make any headway as Ashes were all out for 140 with over 5 overs un-bowled.
Paignton II 248-7 (C Bryan 66, S Glanfield 46no, M Smith 37; J Crouch 3-30), Ashburton 140 (J Pascoe 27, S Edmonds 27; S George 4-17, J Smith 2-19, J Harman 2-34). Paignton (20pts) bt Ashburton (6) by 108 runs.
2nd XI:
After winning the toss Ashes 2's put Chagford 1's in to bat at Varwell Field. The Ashes young attack took wickets at regular intervals, and with 5 catches and 2 run outs dismissed Chagford for 172 in the 33rd over. All the bowlers stuck to the task well but conceded 38 in extras which hurt us. Nial Kemp making his first appearance this season, finished with figures of 7 overs, 5 for 33.
In reply, Phil Pascoe (25) & Marcus Westy (13) gave us a solid start, putting on 44, but were unable to break the shackles of the accurate Chagford bowlers.
As wickets fell, and the game out of reach, first Tom Rushy(23), then Jake Bartram(24 not out) & Nial Kemp(12 not out) led us to 113 for 5 at the end of 35 overs.
So, 8 points was the reward for another spirited performance from our young side.
Thanks go to Fred for umpiring and Annie for scoring, as well as Churchy for preparing the wicket.
Chagford 172 (B Lenyon 47, O Harrington 38; N Kemp 5-33), Ashburton II 113-5 (T Rush 23, J Bartram 24no; J Matthews 2-9, H Mount 2-11). Chagford (16pts) bt Ashburton (8) by 59 runs.
