Saturday 26 June 2021 - Devon League Match Reports

Ashburton first team welcomed Brixham to the Varwell on Saturday. Skipper Ash Berry surprisingly won his fourth toss in a row and elected to have a bowl.

Steve Edmonds (9 overs, 1 for 23) gave little away and was rewarded with an early wicket but Michael Barron (45) and Abdul Muzammil (35) batted sensibly and had taken the score to 83 in the 22nd over when Muzammil was clean bowled by Matt Coon (9 overs 1 for 21). Matt Churchill (9 overs 1 for 36) then dismissed Barron, caught and bowled to leave Brixham 89 for 3. Scott Eaves (35) kept an end ticking over and the score had advanced to 139 for 4 when Will Coon (4 for 32) picked up 3 wickets in an over to reduce them to 141 for 7. George Yabsley (2 for 18) kept things tight and picked up wickets in the dying overs as Brixham reached 165 for 9 after their 45 overs.

Brixham's bowlers also kept things tight on a slow pitch and made Ashburton work hard for their runs. Lloyd White first added 28 with Jake Pascoe (10) and then a further 20 with Berry to leave them 48 for 2 in the 19th over. White and Dan Coles (15) added a further 30 in 8 overs as the tempo of the innings started to increase and then George Yabsley (14) joined White to add a further 41. When Yabsley fell the required target was 51 from the final 10 overs. Steve Edmonds (14no) and White ensured there would be no further mishaps as the target was reached for the loss of 4 wickets with 16 balls to spare. White, who had been unusually patient for much of his innings, hit a flurry of boundaries in the second half of his innings to finish on an excellent, unbeaten 91.

After the game skipper Berry said "A much improved and well rounded performance. The bowling unit was tidy again and crucially we batted in partnerships. Great to see Will back and taking wickets. Then Lloyd building a brilliant innings that saw us home. Still work to do but a solid result.".

Lloyd White who's unbeaten 91 saw Ashburton to victory on Saturday.

Asburton second team travelled to play Hatherleigh thirds and emerged with a comfortable 9 wicket win to make it a successful week for both sides.

Jerry Crouch (3 for 15, Jack Warren (3 for 15), Robin lambert (2 for 22) and Toby Pascoe (2 for 11) combined to bowl the hosts out for 93 in 34.1 overs.

Then openers Phil Pascoe (39no) and Martin Causey (41) knocked off 87 of the target. Toby Pascoe (2no) joined his dad to see the team over the line in the 20th over.
