Saturday 29 May 2021 - Devon League Match Reports

After their first 4 league matches of the season had been lost to the weather, Ashburton first team travelled to Plymouth hoping to get their campaign underway at the fifth attempt.

The pitch was still damp from the rain of the last few weeks and the hosts won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat. Steve Edmonds dismissed the dangerous James Toms in his second over thanks to a stunning catch in the slips by Matt Coon. Coon then ran out the surviving opener when, in the process of dropping a return catch, he diverted the ball onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. Coon then proceeded to run through the Plymouth top order on his way to fine figures of 9 overs, 5 wickets for 26 runs. Well backed up by Edmonds who finished with figures of 9 overs, 2 wickets for 24 runs, Plymouth found themselves 52 for 8 after just 14 overs as only Alex Hill (32) made a score of note. Jack Hughes (15) and Fahad Ali (2 from 54 balls) set about batting time and managed to add a further 23 before Will Coon (1 for 16) broke the stand and Matt Churchill (6.2 overs, 4 maidens, 1 for 5) wrapped up the innings as Plymouth were all out for 77 in 31.2 overs.

Ashburton's openers Lloyd White (20) and Jake Pascoe (12) raced out of the blocks and put on 34 inside the first five overs. Three quick wickets then fell to leave Ashes 38 for 3. Chris Pascoe (33no) and Dan Coles (7no) ensured there would be no further mishaps as the target was reached after 16.5 overs for an emphatic victory.

Ashburton second team entertained Ipplepen thirds and after being asked to bat posted 170 for 5 in their 40 overs. Marcus West (46) and skipper Phil Pascoe (26) gave them an 81 run start and then Martin Causey (18), Jack Warren (13) and a fine unbeaten run a ball 37 from Toby Pascoe saw them to their final total.

Ipplepen struggled to keep up with the asking rate against a tight opening spell from Jerry Crouch (8 overs, 0 for 16) and then Toby Pascoe (3 for 15), Ashton West (3 for 31), Luke Pascoe (2 for 30) and Jack Warren (1 for 7) combined to bowl Ipplepen out for 114 in the last of their 40 overs.
